Presentation

For the first time in France, discover the national company of Uruguay in its exclusive version of the classic ballet Don Quixote, revisited by the Argentine choreographers Silvia Bazilis and Raúl Candal, under the direction of Julio Bocca.

Founded in 1935, the Corps de Ballet from the SODRE (Servico Oficial de Difusion, Radiotelevision y Espectaculos), an equivalent of our ORTF (Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision Française = French national public broadcasting organisation), is one of the most prestigious troupes from South America. After having experienced a period of decline following a fire in the 1970s, it arose from the ashes thanks to the international star Julio Bocca, who took over the direction in 2010. Renamed the BNS | Ballet Nacional Sodre, the principle dancer gave it a new lease of life. The BNS is now the largest in Latin America with a varied classic and modern repertoire and is ever more open to the outside world.
Don Quixote by the BNS is a true firework. A ballet full of colour, which draws its theme from a reinterpretation of the famous picaresque novel by Cervantès, Don Quixote has, since its creation by Marius Petipa, allowed the principles to shine in all their glory in virtuoso pas-de-deux with a Spanish twist and magical ensembles full of humour and high spirits. This version that, in addition to Kitri and Basilio, puts the spotlight on the Knight-errant, develops an unparalleled technique, worthy of its director, Julio Bocca, who was the best and brightest Basilio of his era.

Don Quixote is the shining star of this Festival with the version by the Ballet Nacional SODRE from Uruguay. It is a classic from the grand repertoire, which demands a faultless technique under the apparent lightness and gaiety. Its director, Julio Bocca who was one of the most gifted dancers of his generation, has made this company a jewel from this part of the globe. And it is lovely to think that this 2017 edition reunites the two perfect partners of the ABT (American Ballet Theater): Alessandra Ferri and Julio Bocca.
