The evening when Bonaparte decides to become Napoleon; that evening where he could have perhaps resigned himself to being just Bonaparte …

A winter evening in 1803/1804 in the Tuileries, the First Consul Bonaparte and the second Consul Cambacérès are discussing the future together, or rather Bonaparte is explaining to his trusted friend who loves him dearly, his mad plan to "place the Republic on the throne" by proclaiming himself Emperor!
Maxime d’Abboville (nominated for 2 Molières) reveals an imperial diction in his brilliant performance as an ambitious Bonaparte, master of eloquence, who energetically prepares to become Napoleon. Opposite him, Alain Pochet gives us an understated, stoic, attentive Cambacérès, who replies to his august companion with subtlety.
Beyond the quality of the words and the performances, the play is fascinating since its premise concentrates on those moments where History is a about to change. The conversation between these two men is a brilliant rhetorical exercise during which Bonaparte tests out his arguments and powers of persuasion on the Republican Cambacérès: he knows that if, in spite of his misgivings, he can be persuaded to approve of his desire to take the throne, France will not fail to rejoice in having him as Emperor. The stakes are palpable and we can sense that this conversation bears the seeds of the Great History to come... and without doubt of its end.
To further polish the facets of this theatrical gem, Jean-Laurent Silvi gratifies us with a wisely sober direction where the two actors in costume discuss around a desk.. Which, in this case, is already a Napoleon (era desk)!

Such a hallucinating story that we lose track of time... and we are not alone!

Psychologically rigid, obsessive, puffed up with principles and profoundly honest, Pierre is preparing to conclude the court case of his life, without having the least idea that some of his colleagues are determined to making sure he loses. But suddenly, everything changes: the situation becomes absurd and a very long day begins for Pierre… and the unpredictable character, who will never leave his side.
The play relies on nonsense usually specific to British humour. The tone more delicious for being totally unexpected, is cleverly handled by the playwrights. When the supernatural suddenly bursts in, we have to briefly ask ourselves what is happening. Disorientated for a few minutes, we almost want to turn to our neighbour to get some help! And then we get "it" and let ourselves be taken with delight on this magnificently madcap journey. We plunge into sweet madness, of a caustic humour and in which the comedy of repetition becomes a major art. The experience is wonderful, succeeding in the paradox to make sense out of nonsense while the writing and stage direction, crafted with the extreme precision of a master Swiss watchmaker gives the comedians a razor's edge as a playing field... and a source of literally breathtaking performances.
Theatre is magical and this play proves it!

Etienne Daho, who surfaced from the rock scene in Rennes, is one of the most influential rock stars to have appeared on the French music scene over the last 30 years. With a dozen albums and many hits to his name, this "rock child", whose path is paved with gold and platinum, leads the field in French pop.

Born in Oran, Etienne Daho grew up in Rennes, the main base for the French post-punk scene: it was on the stage of the famous Transmusicales in 1980, that this young fan of English music began his career. Inaugurating the Virgin France catalogue the following year, he straightaway defined his world with a debut album, Mythomane, recorded with Jacno and the musicians from the group Marquis de Sade. In 1983, Etienne achieved his first hits with Le Grand Sommeil andWeek-end à Rome (from the album La Notte, La Notte). In 1986, his third album, Pop Satori, set a new direction. Produced in London with the members of the group Torch Song (including William Orbit, future godfather of techno and producer of Blur and Madonna), this disc was an ambitious attempt to blend the French language with electronic music: ten years later, the album Eden, brought the rhythms of trip hop or drum'n'bass into his songs, masterfully driving the point home. In the meantime, Pop Satori and his string of hits (Tombé pour la France, Epaule Tattoo, Duel au soleil) marked above all the start of what was called "Dahomania", a popularity which 20 years later, has never faltered. Hugely popular with a wide audience for his unusual personality, Etienne Daho's reconciles the independent trends with "variety", and has been the inspiration for many musicians.

A man of taste and generous middle man who takes advantage of his influence to write for others (Jane Birkin, Jacques Dutronc, Marianne Faithfull…), Daho stands out as a complete musician - author, composer, producer and performer. His musical career has been enriched by collaborations as evidenced by the list of artists he has worked with, including musicians (from Serge Gainsbourg to Air and including Brigitte Fontaine, Bashung, Dutronc) and visual artists (Guy Peellaert, Michel Gondry, Nick Night, M/M's, Pierre & Gilles,…). He's an artist who is both discreet and omnipresent, constant yet elusive, he questions himself with each album and revels in reaching out to others. In 1991, Daho was in New York, where he recorded the album Paris, ailleurs, a colossal success (with singles Saudade, Comme un igloo…) which paid tribute to the Stax and Motown labels. Four years later, after a new triumph thanks to covering Edith Piaf's songs (Mon manège à moi) and several pop productions for other artists, he could be found in London, where he collaborated with the pop group Saint-Etienne: the result Reserection, an EP with a strong electro-pop content, including Eden, He’s on the phone, a remix of his Week-end à Rome, which reached number 1 on the British charts. In 2000, Corps et armes created an orchestral opulence illuminated by the sun of Ibiza, while Réévolution (2003), his eighth studio album, saw him renew fifteen years later with the rock tonalities of Pour nos vies martiennes. In 2008, "L'invitation" (L'adorer), rewarded at the Les Victoires de la Musique (French music awards) and a platinum album would be followed by the sound track to "Condamné à mort" (2010) by Jean Genet, with Jeanne Moreau. Hailed unanimously by the critics, the show triumphed at the Théâtre de l'Odéon, the Salle Pleyel and in the main courtyard at the Papal palace in Avignon.

Etienne Daho's unusual career, both faultless and without concession, is like a fairy tale: the story of a child of Velvet and Punk, whose tracks, from Heures hindoues to If and not forgetting Le premier jour and Comme un boomerang, have entered into the Pantheon of French music.

And in fact at the end, the light on the deepest humanity, which the controversial writer strived to make us believe that he lacked.

Astonishing Céline, whom we often identify with an arrogant bully, scornfully surveying the world around him with artistic self-importance, and yet who showed himself to be a man broken by the continual search for the truth, and for a total understanding of the world and his own role in it.
It just required Ferdinand Bardamu to take part in a military parade to sign up for his country. Plunged into the centre of the Great War, he becomes injured, then discharged. Surviving forever bruised, he embarks for Africa and begins a long journey, .
In the character of Bardamu we see the reflections of a naive Céline; a revolted ingénue, marked by his obsession with the death which taints the legendary "Journey to the end of the night". And that's the case, even though we can guess the influence behind his black humour and his propensity to judge his peers and the era that made them with a disaffected ferocity.
Nicolas Massadau's adaptation, created from major extracts of the novel, has the advantage of the moving performance of Jean-François Balmer, full of refinement and tenderness, who, thanks to the startling sincerity of the writer's words, manages to deliver his performance without getting caught up in the traps of his deliberately provocative stylistic melody. The curtain is raised on not simply the artist, but also the man, his faults, doubts and inextinguishable questions.
Do you like Céline? Probably not everything he wrote. But you can no longer hate the man who became a brilliant artist because he looked at his world through the light of his own fears and misunderstandings. Isn't that what we all do?

To bring to light the dance that he loves, Nicolas le Riche takes us on a journey paved with Etoiles (stars).

Considered as one of the most iconic of Etoiles (or Principal dancers) at the Ballet de l’Opéra de Paris, Nicolas le Riche has danced in the greatest productions of the classical repertoire (choreographed by the legends such as Nureyev, Nijinsky, Grigorovich, and Mac Millan for example), while multiplying roles for the great names of the neoclassical movement such as Béjart, Petit, Robbinsand Tanner…His passion for his art, which he sees as a continuously evolving discipline, enriched with new influences and fusions of genres, has led him also to work with the greatest contemporary choreographers who have created the roles with him in mind.
With "Itinérances", the dancer and choreographer has created a programme in tribute to dance, of yesterday, today and tomorrow, and to those who do it and do it well ... the dancers!
By highlighting artists he admires, he illustrates the dance he loves Alongside "Critical Mass" by Russell Maliphant, marked by an aesthetic purity where power and tenderness come together, the magnificent and immortal "Jeune homme et la mort" by Roland Petit, and the picturesque "Annonciation" d’Angelin Preljocaj, whose exaggerated aestheticism transcends the subtle sensuality, he gives us his "Odyssey", a true aesthetic and emotional journey, that is refined and sculptural.
His programme exudes the essence of dance and the sense of aestheticism: it resounds like a living manifesto, signed most beautifully on stage by the excellent dancers who make it so powerfully moving.

It is said of Mercedes RUIZ that she has the "sacred fire": consumed by the art she has developed on stages around the world since the age of 7, she displays total mastery over the rich technical palette and excels in interpreting powerful traditions with matchless stylistic identity.

The Goldberg Variations by Johann Sebastian Bach

After his much vaunted interpretation of the complete "Preludes and Fugues" (Opus 87, for piano) of Dmitri Shostakovich to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the composer's birth, David Levy once again gets down to business, this time with the "Goldberg Variations" of JS Bach, and it's no small challenge. These "Variations" are indeed feared by even the greatest performers because of their musical purity and demanding technicality, yet they are one of the favourite works of classical music fans, who love the power, refinement and rhythmic richness of this composition that has become almost legendary. Amplified by Glenn Gould's famous recording, The "Goldberg Variations" have now acquired something of a romantic aura, with the performance taking on an almost cosmic dimension each time.
David Levy studied piano at the "Royal Northern College of Music" in Manchester, before continuing his training with Yvonne Lefebure and Alain Planes. He performs in concert halls around the world, while teaching his art at the "Conservatoire de Cannes".

A meeting between two young talents whose brilliance and obvious passion undoubtedly herald some of the best days to come for the international classical music scene. One is from the south (Benjamin took up the cello in Cannes at the age of 5), the other from the north (Guillaume, from Valenciennes, began the piano at age of 7), but both have followed singularly similar and parallel paths: a strong musical training (The conservatories of Nice and Paris for one, Lille and Paris for the other ), which was then polished with many international soloists, leaders in their art; winning many competitions and numerous renowned musical awards ... before performing a series of concerts and recitals in France and abroad, being welcomed and encouraged by their peers and invited by the most prestigious Festivals. They are in Cannes this evening to share with us a pure moment of music.

This is one of the most renowned string quartets in the world. Founded in 1964 by Jan TALICH senior, it has since become the ambassador of excellence for the Czech music school throughout the world, either through concerts or its many recordings hailed by international critics.

Over the years, as its members have been renewed, the ensemble has a built up a strong musical identity: just as much for the musical experience which made its name, as the ceaseless enrichment of its repertoire and the many new technical and stylistic inputs over generations of musicians.
Under Jan TALICH junior, who took over the reins in 1997, the quartet has no hesitation in affirming a romantic sensitivity through its recording of "The Complete String Quartets" of Mendelssohn, while reinterpreting the music of Dvorak, Janacek and Smetana, essential works in its repertoire.
They now record under "La Dolce Vita", which brought out recordings of Debussy and Ravel in 2012.

Despite being the son of Djelimady Sissoko, Grand Master of the Gambian Kora, Ballake is self-taught, through observing his father. His predilection for meeting and sharing with musicians from all backgrounds, has enabled him to constantly refine the originality and variety of his melodic compositions: no-one else can get his traditional Maldinkan 21-string instrument to speak such a universal language: truly enchanting and magical!
In 2012 the masterful "At Peace", was released, produced by his new musical partner, Vincent Segal.

By giving the original slave songs a religious identity, evangelicalism was instrumental in the development of Gospel. The joyful spiritual celebrations do indeed have a common structure with those melancholic melodies, odes to lost freedom, whose syncopated rhythms could send people into a trance. Gospel, a major evolution has gradually replaced the original songs. It can still be found today in the heart of the former French colonies in the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean, alongside the traditional indigenous music and dance, which had long fallen out of favour and identified with symbols of revolt and identity aspirations.
"Tambours Croisés" is an original project initiated in 2011 when for the first time it brought together musicians and singers from Martinique, Guadeloupe and La Réunion, to explore and share their respective musical heritage. Mayotte joined the project in 2012, followed by artists from Guyana in 2013. Through residences and a tour of France and Europe, artists are working to achieve a musical expression shaped by each of their original identities.

By combining Gospel songs with "Tambours Croisés", "GOSPEL DRUMS" brings together on stage two musical worlds with shared roots, like finding long lost relatives: tradition and echoes of the past then become a common language for a contemporary artistic expression.

Pianist, composer, producer, actor and writer, the Canadian Chilly Gonzales is a gifted keyboard player with a precocious talent, who is endowed with a rare personality and creative hyperactivity. By the early 2000s he emerged as a star of the Berlin underground, appearing in numerous small venues and clubs with extravagant concerts, a mix rap and pop. But in 2004 the "showman" surprised everyone with his "Solo Piano", an album of classical compositions acclaimed by critics and public alike, reflecting his fascinating qualities as a pianist. Inspired, creative, melodic, precise, extremely technical and virtuosic, the whirlwind that is Chilly Gonzales charms all those who hear him. 8 years later, he released "Solo Piano II", first performing as a soloist in venues across the world, before going on to perform his works in the most prestigious international concert halls with string quartets, chamber ensembles and symphony orchestras.
Between these two albums with a classical flavour, this wonderful eclectic musician recorded albums in other styles (rap, electro, rock ...), worked on original collaborations (Jane Birkin, Philippe Katerine, Feist, Drake, Daft Punk ...), picked up an Emmy Award nomination, wrote and starred in his first film ("Ivory Tower"), organised "Piano Battles", and entered the Guiness Book of Reconds (For his record breaking concert of 27 hours 3mins and 44 seconds on stage in Montmartre) ...
He is currently working on the release of an album of works for a quintet, expected in 2015, while doing a worldwide tour playing to packed houses. At the "Nuits Musicales du Suquet) he will be performing his works specially written for the "Kaiser Quartett" of Hamburg: intimate pieces, full of emotion, over which his irresistible keyboard playing excels in a "seriously light" register.

If Jazz crosses eras and styles, it is because it knows how to refresh itself, to feed off the generations of musicians that carry it forward, to expand and to refine itself as it goes.
Who better than "Guitar Family Connection", where 2 generations of jazzmen stand side by side, to illustrate this? ROMANE, the father, is accompanied by his sons, Richard and Pierre, and they are themselves the 3rd and 4th generation of Manetti family musicians to perform on stage for our greatest of pleasures. The least you can say about them is that the trio have mastered "the art of making Gypsy jazz ring out" with panache! Energetic, rhythmic and harmonious, their jazz translates as a joy for playing in an infectious way. As partners, father and sons excel at uniting to tell us a beautiful story, while revealing different and complementary personalities. Romane (whose CV is so thick that to print it would be an irresponsible ecological act) plays with a style full of musical mastery, ceaseless in its conquest of "beauty" and perfect musicality; for the sons, a more striking fugue, tinged with virtuosity and sparkling originality.
Together, they offer an irresistible "Three man show" of powerful swing, taking us from classics to captivating ballads and pieces of a funky composition. Beyond the clear technical talent that binds them, the tone of their repertoire demonstrates that father and sons also share a huge Jazz culture…which causes their music to resonate well beyond the “gypsy” style.

Originally from the PACA region, the quartet was the real discovery at "Jazz in Marciac" in 2011. Through the titles in their "Lusitania", they invite us on a tranquil journey, a true transatlantic crossing, heading for the rhythms of Brazilian music. The 4 partners create an elegant fusion of jazz and Brazil: from these original compositions (assortment of several very successful cover versions) carved out by Xavier Triviaux comes a deliciously "smooth" atmosphere that leaves us delighted and dreaming constantly of travelling, eyes on the horizon or lifted to the stars.
The unexpected accordion gives the quartet’s score a personality that is as original as it is seductive: the rich sound reveals truly refined treasures, giving a perfect blend with the percussive and delicate piano key strokes…both beautifully accompanied by the swing and groove skilfully produced by the double bass and drums. Over the course of the pieces, we recognise major references: Chick Coréa and Ernesto Pascoal for Brazil, or Michel Petrucciani and Richard Galliano for those who are influenced by our shores.
We allow ourselves to be taken away, with our ears celebrating, and quickly find ourselves not wanting to disembark from this "Lusitania".

A native of Tirana, the singer returns with a 3rd album that relates her origins: this new opus full of songs of traditional Albanian folklore and other nuggets drawn from the national diaspora’s repertoire plunges traditional expression into a subtle and irresistibly modern atmosphere.
While the words evoke images of star-crossed lovers, gnawing solitude and forgotten heroes, the alchemy of Elina Duni and her three partners transforms them into the unexpected. In this case, the improvisation technique unique to Jazz, and the multiple variations in the tone of Elina’s voice, offer a modern twist to the folklore-based inspiration. The quartet confirms itself as a real group in which the cohesion between its members is a powerful one: voice and instruments that understand, listen, speak and respond to each other, to weave a common tale between them. Each appears to start, finish or agree with the other’s "phrase". The overall effect is as refined as it is passionate; creative and carried by a stirring swing. By calling on Jazz like this to sing us her Albanian blues, the Elina Duni Quartet once again touches our hearts.

Born in Tirana in 1981, Elina Duni has lived in Switzerland since 1992. She studied singing, composition and teaching methods at the "Haute Ecole des Arts de Berne (Berne Institute for Performing Arts)", in the Jazz section. The winner of several music awards, she started the quartet in 2005 and released a 1st album, "Baresha", in 2008, followed by "Lume, Lume" in 2011.

For his new project, the guitarist and composer Philippe Petit has embarked on an adventure with three "big names" on the international Jazz scene: 3 Frenchmen and an American living in Paris who can all boast CVs worthy of a true "Who’s Who" in music. Talented, passionate people who use different instruments to speak the same language. This is perfectly portrayed by "Philmanialogy": through a musical recital with 4 tones, sometimes giving a monologue and listening reciprocally, sometimes questioning or answering, each having strong cases to make. These cheerful musical exchanges that showcase their pleasure in playing will be unanimously approved, while the story they tell is a pleasing one. Through original compositions or famous Jazz classics on which they can shine new light, this meandering conversation between excellent musicians evokes recitals by storytellers, which the rhythm and improvisation-filled art renders so captivating.
Surprising and irresistible, yet, as it should be for the best tales, we would be hard-pressed ourselves to relate them to others.

Born in Anchorage, Randy Ingram grew up in California before moving to New York, where he established himself at meteoric speed as one of the most brilliant pianists on the Jazz scene. After his musical studies at the "University of California" and the "New England Conservatory", he perfected his extraordinary talents for the keyboard and for composition with references such as Alan Pasqua, Danilo Perez and Fred Hersch. His playing saw him being regularly acclaimed by the American press: from the New York Times to the San Francisco Chronicle, via Jazz Weekly, each one in agreement in highlighting the calibre and crystal purity of his style, his keen sense of rhythmic harmony and his ability to coax captivating and intriguing melodies from his keyboard. Just as convincing when tackling the vast territory that is jazz as when he is reinterpreting legendary pop titles, the pianist is supported by a solid trio of partners: together they represent 4 of the most gifted musicians of their generation. With the album "Sky/Lift", which came out at the beginning of the year, they offer us modern Jazz that draws the spotlight: contemporary and groovy! This quartet has flair, good taste, dexterity and talent…making each piece they play a real adventure. Without doubt, the international Jazz scene is preparing a bright future for them.
