Cultural, Festival, Dance in Fréjus
  • In a timeless setting, 5 dancers and 3 excellent musicians, fed by flamenco and the avant-garde, make dance the instrument of liberation. Jubilant.

Can we really call these surprising episodes of people getting together and shaking their bodies relentlessly to the point of extremity or even death a dance? This dancing sickness or 'choreomania', which occurred repeatedly over the centuries in various parts of Europe, is the starting point for David Coria's new creation.

Inspired by the facts and legends surrounding this disconcerting event, 'Los Bailes Robados' (the stolen dances, in Spanish) boldly explores the relationship between dance and freedom. Once again, the dancer and choreographer has surrounded himself with the best of the Andalusian scene: in addition to himself, Paula Comitre will be present, alternating with Aitana Rousseau, Florencia Oz, Rafael Ramírez and Marta Galvez, accompanied by singer David Lagos, winner of the prestigious Lámpara Minera, cellist Isidora O'Ryan and guitarist Alfredo Lagos. All of them make this 'pas de deux con vida' an artistic object that is both performance and exorcism, in the hysteria of the movement as well as in the immobile force. "If I can't dance, I'm not interested in your revolution," said the Russian anarchist Emma Goldman. Perhaps these strange dancers had no other purpose than to exorcise their chains. Or simply to express their joy.
