At the age of 20, Korngold was approached by the director Max Reinhardt to compose incidental music for his next production, Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. The young Korngold wrote a suite in five movements for solo orchestra. Fifteen years later, he adapted Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream Overture for the film of the same name, directed by the same Reinhardt after the British play.

In the year of his twentieth birthday, Mendelssohn travelled through Europe and began writing his Scottish Symphony after his discovery of Scotland. The mystery and grandeur of the Highlands are captured in the sweeping, rolling, hushed melodies. On the other side of the Atlantic, the American Samuel Barber imagines an intimate and lyrical concerto.
