Eco-Design

Reducing the environmental footprint of our website

The Palais des Festivals et des Congrès de Cannes is committed to a sustainable development approach that includes its digital ecosystem. The digital sector accounts for 3 to 4% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Although most of this footprint comes from the manufacture of terminals and servers, eco-designing a website means trying to reduce the energy consumption required for its consultation. We are taking concrete action on the environmental impact of our site, in collaboration with our agency Raccourci, whose commitment to eco-design and sustainability dates back to 2018.

The eco-design approach is based on four pillars:

  • The technical eco-design of our Woody CMS.
  • Putting an end to the programmed obsolescence of our Woody website.
  • Using an eco-responsible French hosting partner (OVH).
  • A local carbon offset scheme.

I. Our Technical and Sustainability Eco-design Strategy

A. Technical Solutions (CMS Woody) Eco-design and loading performance go hand in hand. A fast website consumes fewer resources and requires less energy.

Here are the technical solutions we are putting in place to minimise the environmental impact of the consultation process:

1 -Optimisation of Files and Resources

  • Compression and minification of all files (CSS style sheets, Javascript scripts, Favicon, HTML).
  • Always prefer CSS to images.

    2 – Images and Media

    • Compressing and cropping images in progressive JPG and WebP formats.
    • Adapt images to viewing devices (different size and compression on mobiles).
    • Lazy loading of media (images, iframes, video players).

    3 – Scripts and Fonts

    • Delay loading of scripts not required for display.
    • Avoid loading more than 2 different fonts.

    4. Server and Infrastructure Performance

    • Browser caching of resources on first connection.
    • Server caching of pages (Varnish technology) to reduce server computing load.
    • Database caching (Memcached and MongoDB technologies) to reduce database load.
    • Use of a CloudFlare CDN to distribute images, styles and scripts.
    • Use of HTTP 2.0 protocol.

We are striving to move closer to the 115 best practices established by the GreenIT collective, ADEME, CIGREF and AGIT, which are the benchmarks for web eco-design.

    B. Sustainability and the fight against obsolescence

To avoid costly and frequent redesigns, we have adopted an approach based on continuous evolution.

    • The design of the Woody CMS makes it possible to separate form from content.
    • We can carry out complete graphic redesigns without compromising the basic structure (tree structure and content).
    • The website can thus have several lives, capitalising on the long-term investment.
    • The agency provides ongoing updates and improvements (technical, ergonomic and graphic), with new features delivered twice a month.

    C. Eco-responsible hosting and compensation

We work with OVH as an eco-responsible and French hosting company.

    • OVH is constantly reducing the amount of electricity needed to run its data centres.
    • OVH has an average PUE of 1.28, a better result than the average for data centres worldwide (efficiency is better when this figure tends towards 1).
    • The location of our data centres in France guarantees low electricity consumption, low CO2 emissions and compliance with the RGPD.
    • OVH participates in the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact and VMware’s zero carbon commitment.

In addition, Raccourci Agency, a partner of the “Coopérative Carbone” based in La Rochelle, is committed to a local offsetting scheme.

    • The agency has estimated its emissions (servers and car travel) at 30 tonnes of CO2 per year.
    • The agency is taking part in the “LA FORÊT BLEUE” project.
    • To help finance this project, a symbolic contribution of €1 ex VAT/month is offered to all its customers.
    • The agency is also reducing its own car travel by favouring videoconferencing and collaborative tools.

    Our agency's commitments

Raccourci Agency has been strongly committed since 2018 to creating a more sustainable future for all.

“We believe that the digital world can and must play an important role in the fight to protect the environment. That’s why we have made concrete commitments to eco-design and sustainability. In this document, we present the actions we are taking to minimise our environmental impact and the means we are implementing to guarantee the longevity of our digital solutions.”

The document is a February 2023 brief from the Raccourci agency, focusing on its commitment to eco-design and sustainable development in the digital sector. It points out that the environmental impact of digital is significant, mainly due to the manufacture of terminals rather than their use. The agency details its approach to reducing the impact of websites via four pillars, including the technical eco-design of its Woody CMS and the use of an eco-responsible French web host (OVH). The text also explains how Woody is designed for sustainability and continuous evolution to avoid programmed obsolescence and costly redesigns. Finally, it presents the agency’s efforts in terms of local carbon offsetting and compliance with eco-design best practice.

II. Measuring our Digital Footprint (Progrès Score)
