Temptress and provocative, but also rebellious and desperate, Mrs Robinson avoids boredom and unhappiness by over-drinking. When she seduces the young Benjamin Braddock, she stirs up a hornet’s nest, shattering appearances and conventions and unleashing passion and jealousy. By adapting the novel by Charles Webb, Terry Johnson has also skilfully transformed Mike Nichols’ legendary film into theatrical play: Apart from giving us the all too rare chance to see Anne Parillaud in a role which fits her like a glove, Stéphane Cottin’s stage direction immerses us in a modular set which changes at the pace of a magical soundtrack: The Beatles, Lou Reed, The Velvet Underground and of course Simon and Garfunkel! The story evokes the disillusioned context of an America in the 1960s in the grips of the Vietnam war and the fight for civil rights, but under the theatre’s lights, this ode to transgression appears very contemporary: the rebellion of the unbowed Mrs Robinson thunders like the rejection of imposed standards and an authority that feels like an abuse of power. This ‘Graduate’, at once funny and serious, has clearly crossed the generations intact.
