Christos Papadopoulos - "My Fierce Ignorant Step"

Turning movement into song and bodies into instruments, to celebrate the euphoric feeling of existence: in creating *My Fierce Ignorant Step* last year in Athens, Christos Papadopoulos sought to reconnect with the spirit of his Greek adolescence, shaped by the exhilarating music of Mikis Theodorakis set to the poems of Odysseas Elytis. In collaboration with composer Kornilios Selamsis, he has devised a choreographic and sonic landscape that exudes an insatiable thirst for the present and an unshakeable confidence in the future. His ten performers, dressed in simple grey and blue outfits, take to a stage with minimalist set design, their presence alone filling the space. From micro-gestures to running, via stamping and fiercely conquering steps – a nod to the piece’s title – their movement vocabulary draws fluidly on both voguing and jazz dance. Their breathing is woven into the layers of electronic music, and the synchronisation of their movements – which has become the choreographer’s signature across his works – stems here first and foremost from their desire to dance together. The performance thus unleashes a collective energy of remarkable intensity, driven by a group of performers whose commitment and precision carry the piece to a spectacular final climax.
